You also need to have the basics covered to get the most out of your meditation.

Some would require one to sit cross-legged, some can be done on a chair, and some can be done standing up. You can try one or more of these positions. Breathing is another important aspect of meditation. There are several breathing techniques, the most common is slow and deliberate breathing to help relax the mind and body. You inhale deeply and exhale slowly. This breathing technique can be done in a sequence or can be done naturally. The goal is to let your body gradually relax while helping your mind focus and keep out distractions.

Imaging is also important in meditation. This is where the spiritual side of meditation comes in. There are several images suggested depending on the technique. Some examples are imagining a ball of energy on your stomach, or an image of a god or deity. The purpose of the image is also to help the mind focus and be still.

Even if you don't subscribe to any specific meditation technique, performing these basics can help you relax when trying to meditate on your own.
